A Zoo-tastic Weekend

We enjoyed a fabulous final weekend with Grandma, topping off her visit with a trip to the Detroit Zoo. Like the rest of metro Detroit, the zoo is in dire financial straits, and will probably close unless county homeowners agree to a 1% property tax to save it. Yes, the solution to every problem around here seems to be raising taxes.

Anyway, it is a wonderful zoo, and it would be a shame to lose it.

We started out with a train ride to the back of the zoo, from which we would walk back to the front. Not a very scenic ride, but it's good not to have to backtrack as you explore the areas.

The peacocks pretty much roamed freely throughout the zoo. They were loud and annoying.

The kangaroos didn't bother to get up and entertain us, thanks to the incredibly hot, humid weather.

The tigers were enjoying a nice dip in the pool.

I later learned that the polar bears turn green toward the end of summer, thanks to the algae that begins to grow in their hair.

Later in the weekend, Abby and Tristan played with the neighbor girls, as well as some caterpillars.

Finally, we had a farewell tea-party for grandma, complete with hot chocolate, floppy hats and extended pinkies.

Looks like you had a great time. I never knew that about polar bears.
