The Carlsons returned today from visiting Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City, Michigan--about a 4-hour drive from our house. The trip came highly recommended from friends. And it didn't disappoint.
Great Wolf Lodge (there are several of them scattered throughout the states) is a huge hotel connected to a big indoor waterpark--which makes it ideal for off-season getaways and spur-of-the-moment retreats. In addition to the waterpark are other activities, including mini-golf, crafts, a spa and this weird electronic fantasy quest thing that we didn't really investigate.

Every evening the children in the hotel gather in their pajamas for story time beneath the big clock surrounded by animatronic animals.

At the bottom of several slides is the Lazy River, in which you can float around and around in the current in relaxing lazy circles. The water everywhere was very warm.

Abby spent quite a bit of time jumping across the giant lily pads. She got quite good at it.

The family hot tub offered a good break between water hijinks.

The centerpiece is the giant fort-like structure teeming with squirters, waterfalls, climbing nets, splashers and waterwheels, all topped off with a huge 5000-gallon bucket that dumps its contents every few minutes in a massive torrent. The structure also leads to the top of a couple fast waterslides.

A better view.

Our room was on the top, second from the right.

We took a break from the water to play some miniature golf. Abby came in second.

Later in the day we explored a little bit of Traverse City--a really nice place to visit if you have some time and the weather is nice. It was just a bit chilly for our taste.

Here is Abby when we visited this spot in 2006.

Back to the hotel. This is looking down onto the main lobby.

Axel got a lot of water time, too. He seemed to enjoy it.

Abby getting soaked by the giant bucket dump. Fun!
